Principals Report

We all want our students to develop their best qualities and share them with the world. As parents you want your child to connect with other students and thrive in the classroom. Your child can develop the strong character needed for school success if you work with us to teach them to:

• Show empathy. Take time to imagine how others might feel. This will help your child make better decisions.

• Take responsibility. We’re all accountable for our actions. Set a good example by staying in control when it’s difficult. Think before acting. Encourage your child to tell themselves, “I can’t control others, but I can control my choices and actions.”
• Be flexible. Model compromise and negotiation by listening to others’ opinions. Encourage your child to do the same. Having their way is not as important as doing the right thing.
• Be respectful. Your child should use words rather than negative physical behaviour to express feelings. Role-play situations and take turns responding to imaginary challenges they might face.

By working together and supporting each other we can support our students fully in all areas of their development.

This week I received an email from a parent who wished to express her appreciation to everyone involved in making the school soccer teams possible and letting us know that in 6 years of involvement with school soccer Holy Rosary has always displayed a willingness to keep on trying each week and that their good sportsmanship is a credit to the school. Emails such as these are always greatly appreciated. While we know our students always represent us with pride and respect it is certainly lovely when emails such as these pop up in the inbox.

Escape to Everywhere

Given an unlimited travel ticket, where would you like to go? By the time you rattled off your bucket list, I am sure many more places would have sprung to mind and then you would have dreamed of even more. Why? Because at the base of every human heart, there is the desire to have more. Enough is rarely enough. When we get what we want, we settle for just a little while and then we hanker again. This can be good; it can be bad. It depends where it leads us.

In wanting more, we can become selfish…or we can want more and that can feed our interest in other people. That’s right, we are actually made with infinite desires and we cannot fulfil them just within our own self so our desire to see more and experience more leads us to encounter others. This year’s Book Week theme points to the very real encounter we can have with other people and their lives through the medium of books. We may not make it to Afghanistan or Peru or live through war or experience disability or marry royalty but through reading we can ‘go’ to all these places and ‘enter into’ the reality of others’ lives…and as we do our hearts and minds widen and we become rich compassionate people. And this is what we want our children to become…the type of person you would like to encounter on one of your imaginary or real trips. So start them on that journey, buy them the ticket of books.

Last week we celebrated Book Week here at Holy Rosary Catholic School. We began the week by dressing up as our favourite book characters and students in Kinder to Grade 2 participated in our parade. There were many different activities happening in the classrooms to celebrate books and the importance of reading. We also held our annual Book Fair in the library. We must say a very big thank you to Mrs Bourke for all her work setting up the fair and running it each day. We were so excited with the number of books we sold and to see the student's excited about reading their new books. Thank you so much to everyone who came along and purchased a book. A percentage of the Book Fair proceeds goes towards earning Scholastic Rewards for our school, which we can use to buy books and other educational resources.

Year 5 Dominic Taster Day

To enable children to look forward to the transition to Secondary school education, Dominic College held a taster day for all Year 5 pupils on the 22nd August 2017. This was an ideal opportunity for our children to experience a day at Dominic College and to give them the valuable opportunity to experience life as a Dominic student. The children met some of the College’s current pupils and got to experience what life at secondary school is like by enjoying taster lessons in Science/Animal Husbandry, Health and Physical Education, Technology and Robotics, Empower activities and Creative Arts. The day concluded with the ‘Taster Day Cup’ involving several sporting challenges.

Grade 6 Canberra Trip 2017.

Students from our school will soon be undertaking an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognizes the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $150.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Preparations are very much underway for our Grade 6 trip to Canberra in November. We are all getting very excited about this wonderful opportunity for our students. The Grade 6 staff, students and families are working hard with fundraising to ensure that each student will receive $100.00 spending money to take to Canberra. The money will be shared equally among our students, regardless of whether they are travelling to Canberra.

What a great night many in our community had at the Rock Quiz Night. Thank you to Aimee Parnell for her organization of the evening and the coordination of so many great questions and games and the excellent prizes. There were some interesting costumes and some outstanding singing on the Karaoke machine.

No Waste Wednesday

Positive Detective

This term our whole school social and emotional program is called Positive Detective. Keep an eye out in classrooms for the Positive Detective toy dogs who have been hired to become private investigators. Their task is to help us find the positive moments that are all around us.

Parent Notice Board

Medical Certificates

It is a requirement from the Department of Education that any child who misses 5 or more consecutive days must bring in a Doctor’s Certificate upon their return to school.

Extended Holidays

Families wishing to take their child/ren out of school for a holiday longer than 2 weeks must now send an email or letter to the school requesting this absence for their child/ren. Upon receipt of your correspondence the school will reply with a written acknowledgement to your request.

Students Not Returning in 2018

In order to commence planning for 2018 it is vital that we have accurate information regarding student numbers for 2018.

If your child is in a grade other than Grade 6 and is not returning to Holy Rosary in 2018 please contact Ms. Bernadette Brooks as soon as possible.

Woolworths Earn and Learn

Earn & Learn is back. Get your families and friends on board with Woolworths Earn & Learn stickers. Get one sticker for every $10 you spend. Place your stickers and or full sticker sheet into the Holy Rosary Earn & Learn box at your local Woolworths outlet, or drop them into the Woolworths Earn & Learn box located in the school foyer between 26 July and 19 September. The more you earn, the more we learn. All completed sheets earn points for our school to purchase amazing educational resources from Modern Teaching Aids. So get busy shopping and collecting your stickers to enable us to receive wonderful resources for your child/ren to use at school.

Entertainment Book News

A big thank you to all our families who purchased the Entertainment Book. A total of $897 was raised from this fundraising venture which will be used to purchase items from our “wish-list”.
