Principals Report

During the past two weeks our Grade 3 students and Grade 5 students have been on their Camps. It was an absolute pleasure and privilege to spend time with our students on their Camps.

Camps offer invaluable benefits to children. They offer a strong sense of community, teaching children how to live amongst one another and share. The opportunity to stay separate from parents for a period of time shows children how to be independent and self-reliant. During their time on camp students are often presented with challenging activities as a part of the program, which can offer them a chance to build confidence which extends into the classroom, and many other aspects of life. Self-reliance, self-regulation, heightened social and interpersonal skills, teamwork and problem solving are all important life skills developed in the experiences of a school camp.

Despite the range of positives that a school camp can boast, there may be some challenges for students including separation anxiety and homesickness. These potential obstacles can be a challenge not only for the child, but for parents too. It’s not always an easy thing to let your children leave you for days. However, the care and compassion shown by the staff at Holy Rosary Catholic School to all our students on camp should assist in reassuring parents that we all work together to make our camps a positive and memorable experience.

Staff involvement is, of course, vital to every successful camp and I would like to acknowledge and thank our staff who attended and supported our students on Camp. All our staff have their own families, many with young children and it is not easy to be away from home and on call 24 hours a day. We are incredibly fortunate to have staff who are so committed to providing experiences for our students.

I wish all families a safe two week break, it will be a wonderful opportunity to recharge our energies ready for the fourth and final term. We thank all members of our community for their ongoing support of Holy Rosary Catholic School and look forward to our final term which will commence on Monday 16th October.

Absences from School

Parents/Guardians are responsible for ensuring that they notify the school to explain the absence of their children on any particular school day. Notification may be provided via email, Schoolzine or phoning the school office, and should be made prior to the start of the school day. Families wishing to take their child/ren out of school during term time are required to write to the Principal to confirm the absence. The school will reply with a written acknowledgement.

The legal obligations regarding enrolment and attendance, as stipulated in Education Act 1994 (Tas) ss 4-11 are:

s 6(3) A Principal must ensure that a register is kept, recording the daily attendance or absence of each school-aged child.

s 10(1) A child is excused from attendance if he or she is prevented from attending because of a reasonable cause approved by the Principal, and the parent has given notification.

s 10(2) If requested by the Principal, a parent must provide a medical certificate for a child who is absent because of sickness.

s 10(3) The Principal may require a student to not attend a school on any day on which the student has an infection or is suffering from an infectious disease.

Term 3 in Grade 1

During Term Three, Grade One have been focusing on Prayer. We have learnt about different forms of prayer, including the "Our Father', "Hail Mary" and writing our own prayers. We have made prayer mats and prayers that we use during morning prayers, as well as learning how to bring prayer into our daily life.

Grade 3 Camp

Brown’s Cave

On Thursday September 14 nearly 70 very excited Grade Three students set off to Woodfield Lodge, Dysart for their first camp. The first stop was Chauncy Vale and children toured Nan Chauncy’s house, “Day Dawn” and talked about the differences with their own houses. After this everybody completed the challenging bush walk to Brown’s Cave, encouraging and assisting each other.

How much fun
is bush walking!!

Arriving at camp, students were keen to unpack and settle into their cabins, then it was straight into the afternoon activities. The flying fox was a great favourite, even the teachers had a go, archery and the low ropes course rounded out a busy day. The energy levels were starting to fade but everyone enjoyed a BBQ tea and sweets.

Preparing for bed with friends was a lot of fun and the teachers and staff were amazed by how easy it was to settle so many (very tired) children.

Hut building with lots of sticks and bark was a great team building activity in the morning before we packed and headed off to Richmond for lunch and a quick visit to Mrs Richardson at St John’s Catholic Primary School.

Hut building……
so much fun

The bus trip back to school was a lot quieter than the one to camp and children were happy to go home with their parents.

Teachers and staff agree that Grade 3 camp was one of the most enjoyable and successful they have ever experienced.

Grade 5 Camp

The Grade 5 Camp at Far South Wilderness Lodge was a great success. The students did our school proud and were continuously praised by the public for their immaculate behaviour, inquisitive nature and exemplary manners. Highlights of our camp included trekking through the muddy rainforest paths, the many laughs during our talent quest, exploring Hastings Caves, swimming in the thermal spring pool and getting creative during our sand sculpting competition. The students and staff all had a wonderful time. What a fun memorable experience it was!

Kinder P Excursion to Bunnings

On Monday the 25th of September Kinder P visited Bunnings Glenorchy as part of their Sustainability and Recycling Explorations.

Within our Kindergarten Learning Spaces we are endeavouring to

  • Engage Kinder children in discussions about sustainable practices, such as noticing how a garbage bin is full, how food and scraps are left over after meal times etc.
  • Encourage Kinder children to participate in a recycling program (recycling bins for cardboard, plastic and paper) or involve them in developing new strategies for recycling materials (using donated materials for art n craft or donating materials to council clean ups etc.)
  • For Kinders, we choose “Energy Savers” – we are encouraging Kinders to be responsible for noticing lights, fans and other appliances left on when not in use. Likewise, choose ‘Water Savers” – responsible for noticing taps left on and other wasted water.

Our visit to Bunnings involved exploring many of these outcomes. The children especially enjoyed creating their own flower pots, exploring the garden centre and watching the compressors used to 'squash' up the cardboard boxes!

We thank Bunnings for welcoming us to their centre, assisting and sharing their knowledge and resources with us, feeding us morning tea and gifting us with Bunnings Hats, flower pots and a surprise gift.

We had so much fun exploring and creating

Students Not Returning in 2018

In order to commence planning for 2018 it is vital that we have accurate information regarding student numbers for 2018.

If your child is in a grade other than Grade 6 and is not returning to Holy Rosary in 2018 please contact Ms. Bernadette Brooks as soon as possible.

Can all families please make sure the Front Office has CURRENT phone, address and emergency contact details on file.

Lost Property

If your child is missing items of clothing, a drink bottle, a lunch box, a toy or a piece of jewellery, even glasses or keys, we have many items here at the office that have not been claimed. As we approach the end of term we will endeavor to find the owners of these items, however, as so many pieces of clothing are not labelled it is difficult to do this. We invite parents to go through the Lost Property basket located in the school foyer to see if anything is theirs, or call in at the office for lost keys, jewellery etc. Once term finishes any unclaimed items will be disposed of.
