Principals Report

This week our Grade 6 students are in Canberra supported by Mr. Brad Hastie, Mrs. Liz Mason, Mr. Brent Pearce, Mr. Terry Jones and myself. It was with great anticipation we arrived at Hobart Airport at 4.15am on Monday morning to commence our journey. During this week we will be seeing the sights of our National Capital such as Old and New Parliament House, The War Memorial, The National Capital Exhibition, The Australian Institute of Sport, The Royal Australian Mint and Questacon. On Thursday morning we will travel to Sydney by coach and spend time at Manly then a harbor ferry cruise and a walk around the Opera House and return on Thursday evening at approximately 9.00pm.
Such a trip as this takes an enormous amount of preparation and planning and I would sincerely like to thank our wonderful Office staff for all their assistance. On behalf of the parents and students I would also like to thank the staff for their commitment to this trip.
I am extremely grateful that I work with staff who see the value in this trip and are prepared to be away from their own families to support our students to have this opportunity. Thank you to our parents for their support of our Canberra trip and trusting us with your precious children and to all those who particularly assisted with the fundraising to ensure we reached our target of $100 spending money for each student.
In my absence Mrs. Lauren McCallum and Mrs. Gemma Bennett will be Acting Co Principals and I know all in our community will be supporting them fully. We look forward to sharing our adventures in Canberra on our return.

Glenorchy Awards

Safer Communities Awards 2017
Congratulations to the following students who each received an award at the Glenorchy City Safer Community Awards. It was an absolute pleasure to support these students and their families on Tuesday 24th October. Listed below are the citations written on each students award certificate and read out by the Acting General Manager of the Glenorchy Council.
Cooper Nichols Grade 1
Cooper Nichols always shows respect and consideration to his peers, class mates and staff members. He is kind and caring, ensuring he includes everyone in activities. He is thoughtful and takes time to consider his responses. During classroom, sporting and outdoor activities, Cooper always plays fairly and safely.
Reilly Murray Grade 2
Reilly is kind, compassionate, respectful and fair. He independently recognises when another student needs help and actively assists them, often putting their needs ahead of his own. He takes great pride in everything that he does and ensures that he completes every task to the best of his ability.
Eli Stalker Grade 3
Eli is a kind and caring member of our school community. He always assists others if they are struggling or seek help on their behalf. Eli will often identify a task that needs to be completed and will willingly gives of his time on behalf of others.
Isabella Whelan Grade 4
Isabella is the type of student to whom showing respect and support for classmates and staff comes naturally. She demonstrates pride in her school; from her daily routines, to the ‘extra’ tasks Isabella takes upon herself to make the school run smoothly.
Thomas Weeding Grade 5
Thomas Weeding is a thoughtful and respectful member of our school community. He is part of a small group of students who started “No Waste Wednesday” at Holy Rosary, an initiative aimed at reducing the packaging in school lunch boxes. He is also an active member of the local Scouts.
Bonnie Clark Grade 6
Bonnie is a very caring, helpful and respectful Year Six student. She consistently offers support and assistance to those around her earning the respect of all staff and students at Holy Rosary Catholic School. Bonnie displays wonderful leadership qualities and service to others happily volunteering to help out around the school community. She is an excellent role model to younger students and with her strong sense of self and commitment to social justice, is an active advocate for tolerance and inclusion.

Surf Life Saving
Grade 1 & 2 classes were lucky enough to have a visit from Dylan. He is a volunteer life-saver. Dylan came to speak to us about the Bush to Beach program and remind us of the importance of keeping safe around water this Summer.
Dylan taught us the meaning behind the acronym F.L.A.G.S.:-
F=Find the flags - when we go to the beach we should always look for the red and yellow flags. If they are up, we need to swim between them at all times.
L=Look for signs - there may be signs around the place telling us things, like shallow water, rocks underneath etc.
A=Ask for advice - Ask a local if you're not sure where to swim, or where the toilets are etc.
G=Go with an adult - ALWAYS go swimming with an adult, someone to look out for you.
S= Signal for help - If you get into trouble in the water, then you wave your arm with a closed fist and someone will come for you and help you.
We looked at lots of the different equipment that the lifesavers use. There are over 1500 beaches in Tasmania and only 14 of them are manned by life-savers during the Summer, so it's really important that we all know what to do and how to keep safe in and around water.

Kindergarten News
Welcome Back Everyone to Term 4 in Kindergarten. We welcome Mrs Andrea Quick who is currently our Kinder C/Q teacher on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We also welcome Ms Lillian Cooke and Ms Rachel French who are assisting in Kinder P whilst Mrs Angela Fraser is on leave. This term we are exploring our world through provocations, experiences and activities which enable our students to have a sense of the world in which they belong, including home, community, school and our world. We have enjoyed visits from local farm animals, Community workers and have an opportunity to explore the creek area which lays below our school property. Later in the Term we will visit Cornelian Bay and several parks around the Derwent River.

Correct Procedure and Protocol
Parents are respectfully reminded that they need to direct their concerns, queries and suggestions to those who are able to listen, provide correct information and possible solutions, that is, with the teachers and Leadership Team. Discussion amongst parents regarding any concerns is not encouraged as information may be ill informed, misdirected or incorrect advice given.
Dino’s Pizza Community Fundraiser

On Tuesday the 24th of October we held a community fundraiser for Dino's Pizza. Thank you to all those who brought in coins to help spell the word COMMUNITY and to the Parish who donated $300. In total we raised $1255.90 which we will present to Dino’s staff at our Assembly on November 20th.
