Principals Report

We have all settled in well to the start of Term 1 2018. Students and staff are very comfortable in their learning spaces. In the letter sent home to families last week I formally welcomed our school community for 2018 including our new staff and Kindergarten students. We would like to especially welcome the following students who have joined our community; Issabella, Tahlia, Marshall, Victoria, Jay-Paul, Maddison, Alex, Poppy, Jet and Levi.

In the coming weeks as the reality of full-time schooling sets in, your child may be anxious after returning back to school. If so, one way of helping them is to talk through their fears:

  • Set aside time to talk about school and take an interest in what they have been doing
  • Listen carefully to any worries your child might have but build on their positive experiences
  • Find out about what happens at school during the day so you have a realistic picture
  • Keep a regular routine at home to keep stress to a minimum
  • Use our Schoolzine App and Website and information sent home to make sure your child knows what is happening and is informed and prepared about any changes to their routine
  • Encourage your children to build friendships with children in their class

Listed below are some questions that are good to use for discussion starters with your child.

What made you smile today?

  • What made you smile today?
  • Can you tell me an example of kindness you saw or showed?
  • Tell me something you know today that you didn’t know yesterday?
  • If you could change one thing about your day, what would it be?
  • What made your teacher smile?
  • What was the hardest thing you had to do today?

Please remember we are all in partnership for the best learning outcomes for your child.

Prayer and Reflection

Prayer for the Start of the School Year

God of wisdom and might,
we praise you for the wonder of our being,
for mind, body and spirit.
Be with our children as they begin
a new school year.
Bless them and our staff and our community.
Give them strength and grace as their bodies grow;
wisdom and knowledge to their minds as they search for understanding
;
and peace and zeal to their hearts.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Basil Byrne

Basil Byrne was an incredible support to the Holy Rosary Catholic School Community and St Bernard’s Parish over many decades. Basil assisted at all school Masses and liturgies and helped our students prepare for Masses and worked with those students assisting on the altar.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Basil.

Eternal rest grant to him, O Lord; and let light perpetual shine upon him.
May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Parent Teacher Student Goal Setting

Each class will be producing a Class Information Booklet that will be sent home to parents in the next fortnight. These booklets in conjunction with the Parent Handbook sent home in the first week should provide parents with all the necessary information relevant to each class. As a consequence we will not be holding Parent Information Class Sessions.

From the 5th to 9th March we will be holding Student/Parent Goal Setting Interviews with the class teacher. Each student must accompany their parent/guardian to these 10 to 15 minute interviews and work together to set goals for the 2018 school year. The process of setting goals allows students to choose where they want to go in school and what they want to achieve. By knowing what they want to achieve, they know what they have to concentrate on and improve. Goal setting gives students long-term vision and short-term motivation. Having sharp, clearly defined goals, which students can measure, will allow them to take pride in accomplishing those goals. They can see clear forward progress in what might have seemed a long drawn out process. By setting goals students can: improve their academic performance, increase their motivation to achieve, increase pride and satisfaction in performance and improve their self-confidence. Further information will be sent home shortly.

Safety In Our School

One of our school expectations is SAFETY. As with all three of our school expectations we explicitly teach the expectation of safety to the students and we ask all parents to assist us in this and model this expectation through the manner in which they access the school. One of the best ways to do this is through using the Wyndham Road pedestrian crossing as well as modelling the importance of stopping at driveways to check for traffic entering and leaving the school grounds. Parents and students are asked to not walk through the driveway.

Each morning and afternoon there is a substantial amount of traffic around the school and in order to ensure the safety of our students we ask parents to please use the crossing and to take care when entering and exiting the Kiss and Drop Zone. Drivers are reminded that they cannot turn right from the school driveway and must only enter Kiss and Drop from the entry drive way only (top driveway).

Parents are reminded that students must not wait outside the church for pick up, and must use the Kiss and Drop area where they can be safely supervised.

Parent parking is available in the Church car park and behind the shops. Parents are asked not to park in the school grounds during drop off and pick up or in the Staff Car-park. Please ensure that the Disabled Parking Spaces are available for those who need them.

A reminder to all parents that if they are volunteering or visiting the school they MUST sign in at the School Office. It is essential that a copy of the Working With Vulnerable Children Check card is provided to the office. Any students who need to leave school early must be signed out at the Office and a purple sign out card given to the class teacher. Please be aware that if you are not known to the Office Staff you may be asked for photo identification.

It is our priority as a school to ensure the safety of all our students.

The Lollipop Lady (Lee)

As children are excited and eager to see their friends they have a tendency to not listen or concentrate. The white line on each side of the crossing is there as a barrier to help keep the children at a safer distance from the edge of the road and to allow a clear view of traffic. INSIDE THIS LINE IS MY AREA and all users will be asked to stand behind the line and only move over the line when it is safe to do so.

Can you please leave me a parking spot in the afternoon (most of you know where I have parked for 4 years) as I have too much to carry a long distance when it is too hot or freezing cold.

I can’t wait to catch up with you all.

Grade 3 to 6 Swimming Program

Please be advised that the Grade 3-6 swimming program commenced Tuesday the 13th of February at the Hobart Aquatic Centre and will finish on Friday the 23rd of February. Students are reminded to firstly bring back their permission form and to ensure that each day they bring bathers, towel and a plastic bag for wet clothes (thongs are pretty handy too!). The wearing of sports uniform is permitted on these days. If students own goggles they are also permitted to wear these. The swimming program is a great opportunity for students to hone their skills and get some valuable practice in prior to the HRCS Swimming Carnival.

Grade 3 to 6 Swimming Carnival

Wowee! it's that time of year again! Grab your swimming gear and slip slop slap! The HRCS 3-6 Swimming Carnival will be held on the 16th March at the Glenorchy Swimming Pool from 10:15am - 1:15pm. Students will be involved in multiple activities during the day including their grade swimming races. All of these activities will enable students to gain points towards the HRCS House Cup. Can the Doyle Wolf Pack prevail again? Could D'Arcy the Pride of HRCS get back on the winners list or will the Yellow Army rise again as the Young Falcons look to make it two carnival victories in a row! A timetable is attached below and a permission note will be distributed in the coming weeks. Parents and spectators are strongly encouraged to attend what will be another great carnival for our students!

Uniform Questions

It has been so wonderful to see how our students return to school wearing their uniform with such pride. I know there have been some questions and concerns in relation to uniform and listed below is an attempt to explain these to parents;

  • Students from Grade 1 to 6 must wear black formal school shoes with the formal uniform to and from school. Skate shoes, black sports shoes or shoes with a white sole are not suitable. Students may change into sports shoes during the day for morning tea and lunch.
  • The new rugby top is available but there is no expectation that parents purchase this until 2020. We will have a two year change over to the new rugby top.
  • Students may wear either the blue hat or the new maroon hat.
  • Each year the idea of a summer dress is discussed. It is worth parents being aware that a good quality summer dress will be approximately $70.00 and this is a cost that many families in our community would find to be a significant imposition.
  • All Kindergarten and Prep students will be in the sports uniform each day.
  • Please do not hesitate to contact me on bernie.brooks@catholic.tas.edu.au if you would like further clarification

New Rugby Tops

After Board and parent consultation we will be introducing a new rugby top to our school uniform in 2018. This is to bring the colour of the top into line with the new soft shell jackets that were introduced last year. There will be a two year change over period so if your child has our current rugby top they may continue to wear this until the end of 2019. We would like to stress that it is not a requirement to purchase the new top immediately as we do not wish to place undue pressure on families who may have recently purchased our current one.

House Polos

In an exciting development students will be able to purchase House Polo tops for the first time at Holy Rosary. The tops are available in the three house colours and have the school logo on the front and house insignia on the back with all child/youth sizes available(see photos). The Polos can be worn to all school sports carnivals and Ploughman Cup events throughout the year and are a great way for students to support their house.

Students/parents can order the Polos on special order for $30 (payment with order) from the office.
