Principals Report

At Holy Rosary Catholic School we have a dedicated Social and Emotional Program. The focus for the first part of this term has been on learning how to manage feelings, manage friendships and solve problems. These essential life skills promote wellbeing and positive mental health. Children who have developed social and emotional skills find it easier to manage themselves, relate to others, resolve conflict, and feel positive about themselves and the world around them. Students are provided and taught practical skills they can apply across a range of situations at school, home and in the broader community. Our program has explored concepts such as having an awareness of self and identifying the many different emotions we can feel, recognising the appropriate ways to manage and regulate our emotions and appreciating differences and diversity within others.
On Friday March 16th there is a dedicated day for National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. While it is important that this issue is recognized by a national day, the issue of bullying is one that needs to be addressed daily and form a core component of the Social and Emotional Program. Bullying is complex and multifaceted and manifests in different ways for each school and year level. Each instance is unique. Rather than focus only on instances of bullying, we focus on the ideas for a safe and supportive school community and the importance of involving students in the school’s approach to countering bullying and creating a safe and supportive and respectful school environment for all. We are working closely with our school Psychologist to prepare for a parent session in relation to the Social and Emotional wellbeing of students.
At Holy Rosary Catholic School we understand that emotions matter. This year we have been extremely fortunate to be awarded funding for members of the leadership team to travel to Melbourne to complete the RULER Training. RULER is an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning that helps school communities integrate the practice of emotional intelligence into daily life. Decades of research shows that emotional intelligence is essential to effective teaching and learning, sound decision making, physical and mental health, and success in school and beyond. Research also shows that when schools and homes partner to support children’s emotional development, children not only feel better, but they do better. Lauren McCallum, Gemma Bennett, Brent Pearce and myself will complete this training on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th March in Melbourne and we look forward to sharing the RULER approach with our school community. In my absence Mrs. Jacinta Waddington will be Acting Principal.

Free Dress Day
We were absolutely overwhelmed at the response to our Free Dress Day last week. An incredible amount of donations were sorted and wrapped in preparation for our Pick a Stick Stall at our Welcome BBQ and Mini Fair on Friday 23rd March. A huge thank you to all our helpers who spent a long day on Friday sorting and wrapping. Make sure you keep Friday 23rd March free, it is going to be a fantastic event for our community.

Aussie Sports Leaders
At our assembly on Monday our Grade 6 Aussie Sports Leaders were introduced to the school community and presented with their special ASL caps. These students fulfil a special leadership role in our school and assist with Physical Education lessons with our younger classes, setting up equipment and are special helpers at all our School Carnivals.

Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser
Congratulations to our Grade 6 team; staff, parents and students who in a matter of hours organized and coordinated a BBQ when Bunnings contacted us with a vacancy. The funds raised will go towards our Grade 6 students spending money for our Canberra Trip in November.

Grade 3 to 6 Swimming Carnival
The HRCS 3-6 Swimming Carnival will be held on the 16th March at the Glenorchy Swimming Pool from 10:15am - 1:15pm. Students will be involved in multiple activities during the day including their grade swimming races. All of these activities will enable students to gain points towards the HRCS House Cup. A timetable is attached below and a permission note will be distributed in the coming weeks. Parents and spectators are strongly encouraged to attend what will be another great carnival for our students!

Year 7 Enrolment Process
To assist families with the transition process from primary to secondary schools the 2018 Year 7 enrolment process has been broadened to allow families of students in Years 5 and 6 to commence the enrolment process for Year 7 in Catholic education. Therefore, advertisements will be circulated shortly opening up the enrolment process for Year 6 students who will commence Year 7 in 2019 and Year 5 students who will commence Year 7 in 2020. This process will continue to be based on the TCEC Enrolment Policy, which can be accessed by the Tasmanian Catholic Education Office Website. In opening up this process we hope it will provide an opportunity for families to discuss any concerns they have about their child’s transition and provide certainty around their ongoing education pathway into Year 7.
