Principals Report

Last week was Catholic Education Week and was a time to celebrate and recognize all that makes us unique as a Catholic School. John Mula, the Director of Catholic Education in Tasmania wrote, ‘Catholic schools and colleges strive to develop in children faith, spirituality, life-giving values, and a clear sense of right and wrong to give greater meaning and purpose to all that they do. Families and teachers want our students to be good citizens and people of integrity’.

At the Tasmanian Catholic Education Commission Recognition Awards last Thursday, Mr. John Rickwood was recognized for his 25 years of service to Catholic Education. This award recognized John’s significant and valued teaching at Holy Rosary Catholic School. Holy Rosary Catholic School was represented at the Catholic Education Week Mass held at St Mary’s Cathedral by 25 Grade 6 students and Mrs. Lauren McCallum and Mr. Brent Pearce. Mrs. McCallum and Niah Bester, one of our School Captains were presented with our Certificate of Validation to Operate as a Catholic School.

We concluded the week with an outstanding evening at our Mini Fair and Picnic. Food, Life Be in It, Jumping Castle, Footy, Cricket, Softball, Tennis, Basketball, Pluck a Duck, Cakes, Books, an antique Fire Engine, Adopt a Bear, Chocolate Throw, Milkshakes, Ice Creams and so much more were on offer. The community spirit shone through during the evening and we would sincerely like to thank our many families for all their support with donations, stalls and attendance. A very special thank you to Michelle Crennan and Rachel Green who worked tirelessly for this event. A highlight was indeed Pick a Stick and special thanks must also be extended to Belinda McCreghan for the amazing effort that went into the organization of this stall and to all our other stall coordinators for the many hours they put into preparing stalls. Our Parent Circle led by Mrs. Allison Norman are indeed an example of the commitment of our parents to ensure that our community spirit flourishes. An incredible $7000.00 was raised from the evening, this money will go towards further resources for our students.

Prayer and Reflection

“Do this in memory of me…”

“It is a poor memory that only remembers backwards.” So said a character in Alice in Wonderland or was it Through the Looking Glass? I don’t remember – I’d have to check the information.

This coming week, we Christians use a different form of memory. It is not about information from the past but remembering the presence of God in Jesus Christ 2000 years ago so that God can be present today in our world - in you and in me. We remember, not for Jesus’ sake, but for our own. By prayerfully remembering the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ we allow his love and life to enter into our own – especially where we most need it.

In this week when you attend the prayers and liturgies, at school or at the church, take your griefs and sorrows, your struggles and joys with you. In your heart pray, “Jesus remember me, as I am remembering you” and then be open to receive his reply for he will surely send his good Spirit to guide you through the challenges of your life. Be prepared though – sometimes that Spirit comes from left field, from people and places we don’t expect or want to hear from. Sometimes that Spirit suggests some strange and radical behaviour – like forgiving people who have hurt us, or like confronting people who frighten us, or like expecting us to love in very unloving situations. As we remember Jesus in those situations we can draw strength from him for we can be certain of this – he is remembering us.

Loving Father,
As we recall the events of Jesus’ death and resurrection,
Open in us that type of remembering that allows him to become real in our lives.
With his Spirit to guide us, may his life, guide us into new ways of loving.
We ask this in his name confident that you will hear us.

(Sister Kym- Benedictine Nun)

Easter Liturgies

Our Prep and Grade One Classes led the whole school in our Palm Sunday Liturgy. Traditionally this is the first day of Holy Week. This is the day our Lord Jesus Christ enters Jerusalem riding on a donkey, welcomed and surrounded by all his followers. Our school community welcomed Jesus into our lives and into our hearts.

Grade 2 led us on Wednesday for the Holy Thursday Liturgy.

Grade 5/6 will lead us in the Stations of the Cross today at 12.00pm. When we return from the Easter break Grade 4 will lead us in the Resurrection on Thursday 5th April at 12.00pm.

Catholic Education Week

Catholic Education Week was celebrated between 18th - 24th March. This week is a wonderful occasion for students, teachers, families and parishes to acknowledge the strengths and achievements of Catholic schools. The theme for this year’s Catholic Education Week was “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me” from the Gospel of Luke. On Thursday 22nd March, we took 25 Grade Six students to celebrate Mass at St Mary's Cathedral, along with representatives from Catholic Schools across Southern Tasmania.

Lent in Grade 1

Lent

Lent is a time when we try to grow in love and goodness and kindness,
just like God wants us to.
During Lent, we try hard to help others who need our help
and pray a little more often.
Lent is also a time we fast from food
or go without some of our special treats.
In Grade 1,
we made our own Lenten
promises in order to show Jesus we love him and want to live
more like him.

HRCS Swimming Carnival

On a balmy Friday morning the Holy Rosary masses converged on the Glenorchy Pool for the 2018 Swimming Carnival. The house groups entered the arena with banners and flags waving in a sea of yellow, red and blue ready to perform for their house and gain points towards obtaining the house shield in 2018.

Throughout the day there were some tremendous efforts in the pool from all our competing students. Our mega Grade 4 team started like an old John Deere tractor but finished with like a Ferrari. Overall it was a fantastic day that was enjoyed by all who attended, and in a side note the Wolf pack of Doyle went back to back to take the swimming shield in 2018!

In summing up I’d like to thank our awesome staff for all their help on the day and in particular our parent volunteers with a big thanks to Suzie Banks whose tech savviness ensured we were able to get the results we needed at the conclusion of the carnival. Without your support these events don’t go ahead so a big thanks from the PE department!

Next up is the Cross Country Carnival in term 2 on our school grounds! Can the D’Arcy Lions or the Young Falcons arrest the Crimson Tide? Or will the Doyle Wolf Pack rise again?

Until then, have fun and stay active!

Year 7 Enrolment Process

To assist families with the transition process from primary to secondary schools the 2018 Year 7 enrolment process has been broadened to allow families of students in Years 5 and 6 to commence the enrolment process for Year 7 in Catholic education. Therefore, advertisements will be circulated shortly opening up the enrolment process for Year 6 students who will commence Year 7 in 2019 and Year 5 students who will commence Year 7 in 2020. This process will continue to be based on the TCEC Enrolment Policy, which can be accessed by the Tasmanian Catholic Education Office Website. In opening up this process we hope it will provide an opportunity for families to discuss any concerns they have about their child’s transition and provide certainty around their ongoing education pathway into Year 7.

Holiday Clinics for Primary School Cross Country Runners

During the first term holidays, the Northern Suburbs Athletic Club will run three free sessions on cross country running for primary school children grades 3 to 6. We hope to get a squad of about 24 to attend these sessions.

One of our aims is to help children prepare for the various school cross country competitions which will be held this term and next term, and to pass on information on events that may interest them.

The practice sessions will focus on skills, tactics and knowing how to run your best. The program is for children of all abilities who have an interest in improving their running. While the sessions are not overly demanding, children will need to be fit enough to enjoy physical activity for an hour and a quarter.

The sessions will be organized by Jim Court, a registered teacher and level 2 athletics coach, with the able assistance of members of the Northern Suburbs Athletic Club.

If there is sufficient interest, a squad will be formed to continue cross country practice once a week during term 2.

All sessions will be held at Tolosa Park starting at 10:45am and finishing at 12 noon. Sessions will be held on Thursday 19th April, Tuesday 24th April and Thursday 26th April.
