Principals Report

It is hard to believe that we are at the end of First Term and the enrolment processes for Kindergarten 2019 is occurring. It has been wonderful to hear the many positive responses to the question, “Why have you chosen Holy Rosary for your child?”. Prospective parents speak of the reputation, the way our students present themselves in public, the educational opportunities and the care and compassion that they have heard Holy Rosary offers. As I have taken prospective parents on tours around the school the welcome and the manner in which our students have conducted themselves has been outstanding and is such an excellent example of what a great place Holy Rosary truly is. Please note that applications for Kindergarten 2019 positions close on 4th May 2018. If you have a child to enrol or know of someone who does, please contact the school office (6275 5200) for an enrolment form.
Interviews for new families for Kindergarten are occurring now and interviews for existing families will be held in June.
I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the staff, parents and most especially the beautiful students of Holy Rosary Catholic School for the many wonderful events and activities and work that has occurred during Term 1. We would also like to wish Ms Lillian Cooke every blessing as she commences her Maternity Leave.
On behalf of the entire school community I wish everyone a wonderful and safe Term One holidays.
Kind Regards
Bernadette Brooks
Principal
Prayer and Reflection
The Quiet Resurrection
You’d think God would have done a better job of announcing the Resurrection of Jesus. Here is the most important event in human history – the overcoming of sin and death, in which the richness of divine life is offered to us – and it takes place in a backwater country to a small group of ordinary people. Even then God doesn’t swamp their lives with amazing miracles, lights or glory. No, Jesus comes into their midst, at first unrecognised, reveals himself, assures them of love and forgiveness and then disappears before they realise what has really happened. One thing he does do is to tell them to go and preach this ‘good news’ to all the world. It is only afterwards reflecting on the event and telling others of it does its wonderfulness really hit them.
God is like that in our lives. We rarely have dramatic or exciting things happen to us when we pray or go to church. If we did the churches would be packed on Sundays. No, God usually comes very quietly into our lives and we usually have to reflect on what has happened before we realise its richness and meaning. I think this is because God does not want us to be in awe of but in love with God. God wants to be friends with us, not a dazzling entertainer or powerful master. To foster this friendship, we need to take time to be with God, both alone reflecting and praying, and then praying with God’s other friends in the community, that is Church. Then, as it happened to those first disciples, the sheer wonder of the Resurrection of Jesus will come into our lives.

Loving God,
send your Spirit into our hearts to reveal the mystery of love at work
within us.
May Jesus come into the dead and dark places of our lives and bring his
mystery of Resurrection.
We ask this in his name, confident that you will hear us.

Inter Primary Swimming Carnival
On Friday the 6th of April the best of Holy Rosary's aquatic wonders ventured into the big smoke to compete in the annual SCPSSA Inter Primary swimming Carnival, and what a great day it turned out to be! Our 2018 group proved to be one the best swimming teams to ever come through the esteemed halls of Holy Rosary. Not only did we smash our previous ribbon haul from 2017, we competed with great vigour and exuberance and the support for one another from the stands was exceptional from the first race to the last. I would like to personally thank Ms Adrienne Reeve for her magnificent work organising the troops on short notice after the unfortunate omission of Mrs. French (get well soon). Your work with the camera (see photos) was, as always top notch, and a big thanks to Mr Atkin for providing assistance with relays. I don't normally single out individuals in the newsletter but our very own Madame Butterfly, Ella Striker, left the pool on Friday with enough blue ribbons to make a D'Arcy t-shirt after she very nearly completed a clean sweep of the Grade 4 girls A Division races, easily the best performance I've ever seen from a junior swimmer at the Inter Primary Carnival. Well done Ella! Finally a big thanks to all the parents who got away from the rat race for a moment and supported our team, your presence and support really helped! Next big event is our HRCS Cross Country Carnival in mid-May, get ready to run in PE!
Mr. Johnson

Milo Cricket T20 Southern Final
On a glorious Autumn Wednesday, Holy Rosary's finest wielders of the willow made their way to Cornelian Bay Sports Grounds for the Southern Finals of the Milo T20 Cricket competition. With the sandpaper tucked firmly away in their Cricket bags and their minds set firmly on playing fairly and in the spirit of the game, our team toiled away and after starting slowly against a ruthless Corpus Christi unit they began to get their game going against solid competition from St. Cuthbert’s and Sacred Heart Geeveston. The boys played tremendously all day and displayed great team spirit and camaraderie from the first ball to the last. In the end we didn't progress to the State Final but I have a feeling that we'll only get better with the experience! A big thanks to Mr Atkin who helped umpire and bought me a milkshake at the end of the day. All in all a great day was had by everyone! Well done lads, I'm sure we'll go one better next year!

School shoes and uniform
The school holidays are an appropriate time to remind parents that it is a school expectation that students wear formal leather school shoes with the formal school uniform. We are very happy for students to bring sandshoes to change into during the day and then change back into their formal school shoes to go home. When you enrolled your child at Holy Rosary Catholic School all parents signed an agreement to uphold the expectations of our school and one of these is the wearing of the correct uniform.
School Attendance
Attending school every day has a big impact on how well your child goes at school. Attendance has a positive impact on students’ learning. Because of this, the new Education Act specifies the reasons a child can be authorized not to attend school. It is important that you discuss why your child is absent from school with the school Principal or a staff member as soon as practicable. The changes to being authorised not to attend school will help address absenteeism, which has been a longstanding issue in Tasmania.
These changes:
- Encourage regular school attendance to help your child to make steady progress with their learning and gain the skills and knowledge needed for success both now and later in life.
- Help your child see themselves as a valuable and enthusiastic member of their classroom with high expectations of their own potential.
- Help you to emphasise to your child the value and importance of their education.
- Ensure there is a consistent statewide approach to authorised absences across all Tasmanian schools.
HRCS Soccer 2018 Facebook Page
HRCS Soccer now has a Facebook page. This will be the platform used to distribute information and create a network for the HRCS Soccer community. Over the next week information will be posted about the upcoming season. In the meantime, jump on, give it a like, follow and share!
Soccer News
On Friday evening and Saturday Holy Rosary Soccer teams commenced their games with the Season Launch at Brighton. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and commitment of our students and families. On behalf of all our families I would particularly like to acknowledge our Coaches and Managers for giving up their time to ensure our students can participate in weekend sport. A very big thank you to our amazing soccer coordinator Ms. Sally Feldmanis who has been tireless in her organization, commitment and communication with Soccer Tasmania, the school and families.

Holiday Happenings
Holiday Clinics for Primary School Cross Country Runners
During the first term holidays, the Northern Suburbs Athletic Club will run three free sessions on cross country running for primary school children grades 3 to 6. We hope to get a squad of about 24 to attend these sessions.
One of our aims is to help children prepare for the various school cross country competitions which will be held this term and next term, and to pass on information on events that may interest them.
The practice sessions will focus on skills, tactics and knowing how to run your best. The program is for children of all abilities who have an interest in improving their running. While the sessions are not overly demanding, children will need to be fit enough to enjoy physical activity for an hour and a quarter.
The sessions will be organized by Jim Court, a registered teacher and level 2 athletics coach, with the able assistance of members of the Northern Suburbs Athletic Club.
If there is sufficient interest, a squad will be formed to continue cross country practice once a week during term 2.
All sessions will be held at Tolosa Park starting at 10:45am and finishing at 12 noon. Sessions will be held on Thursday 19th April, Tuesday 24th April and Thursday 26th April.
