Principals Report

One of the many things I have learnt over the past years is that two people regardless of age can share an experience and later retell the details of the experience in completely different ways. How is it possible that if we were both there, and the same thing happened while we both observed or participated that we could each remember and recount the details so differently? It is actually just that our perception of the experience or event is interpreted from our own unique lens. Everyone has a way of understanding and perceiving the world and what occurs in it. No two people will ever perceive anything exactly the same way. This is why another person loves that song you hate or sees something in that piece of art that you don’t. These differences in our perception can be fascinating and interesting, but also a great source of problems. This is exactly the same with our own children and our students. Everyone is approaching things from their own perspective.
When our students have a conflict in the playground we spend a considerable amount of time talking to all involved to get a clear picture of what has happened. Inevitably we get a number of different perspectives. However, the main aim in these discussions and mediations are to provide support and guidance to help our students learn the social and emotional skills they need to get on effectively with others. One of the best ways to resolve a conflict is to try to imagine what the other person might be hearing, feeling or experiencing.
When you realize that there are two sides to every story, that everyone holds different thoughts, feelings, beliefs and ideas, then and only then can you truly begin to solve problems. Healthy relationships cannot exist without empathy. When understanding one another matters more than being right, you can resolve problems much more effectively.

Prayer and Reflection
For too many people being ‘spiritual’ is associated with calm, tranquility and aloofness from the troubles of this world. Not so for the Christian. Being ‘spiritual’ for us means being filled with the Holy Spirit, who brings us peace, yes, right in the midst of the troubles of this world, and especially its sin. Our peace comes not from withdrawing from difficult situations but from living within them knowing that we are fed and sustained by a wise and loving higher Power.
Electricity is a good image for how the Spirit helps us in our lives. We only ‘see’ electricity in its effects: it makes things work. If we want help in dealing with our own sins and those of others, the Spirit is the person to ask. We won’t be given a warm fuzzy feeling but we may find the insight to make a wise decision, the patience to hold back our anger, the self-control not to place the next bet, the strength to put the next foot forward in our current challenging situation. The Spirit offers us help in taking simple practical steps to bring love into the midst of our daily messy life, simple practical steps that make for peace. All we have to do is ask for the power to become truly Spiritual people.

Come Holy Spirit,
give me the wisdom, knowledge and courage to respond lovingly in the challenges that I face. Under your care, may I know the peace that Jesus wants for me.
I ask this in his name confident that you will hear me.

Inter-Schools Primary Cross Country
After weeks of gruelling preparation the best of Holy Rosary's cross country runners ventured to the gateway of the southern beaches (Rokeby) to compete against the elite of Catholic school runners in southern Tasmania. In windy yet mild conditions the mighty maroon army thrived. Jesse Cox wowed the crowds with a career best performance in the grade 5 boys event finishing second overall! Well done Jesse! We had nine students qualify for the All Schools Cross Country after finishing in the top ten and most importantly all of our competitors did their absolute best and didn't stop trying in true Holy Rosary spirit. I would like to personally thank Mr.Mackenlay who set up and packed up our area and managed to fit in some finish marshalling as well! Finally I would like to thank Mr. Hastie (and his pink shorts) for all his support and encouragement on the day!

All the best to our All Schools Cross Country runners who head North to compete against the State's best in a fortnight.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Ella. Ella has been selected in the Tasmanian State Swimming Team to compete at the School Sport Australia Swimming Championships in Hobart from Wednesday 25th July to Tuesday 31st July.

Congratulations to Charlie. Charlie has been selected in the State U12’s Football Team. He will be participating in the School Sports Australia Carnival to be held in Canberra.
School Shoes and Uniform
A couple of weeks ago we had our School Photos taken. On these days each student in our school was in the correct uniform with the correct shoes and they all looked so impressive. It is so disappointing to note that students continue to come to school in the incorrect uniform and shoes and wearing sports uniforms on days when they do not have sport.
It is a school expectation that students wear formal leather school shoes with the formal school uniform. We are very happy for students to bring sandshoes to change into during the day and then change back into their formal school shoes to go home. In addition, parents are reminded that unless advised Sports Uniform for Grade 1 to 6 students is ONLY to be worn on the days that students have Physical Education or for Grade 5/6 students when they are involved in Friday Sport.
When you enrolled your child at Holy Rosary Catholic School all parents signed an agreement to uphold the expectations of our school and one of these is the wearing of the correct uniform. We really are relying on parents to help us by supporting and following these uniform expectations.
Student Reports
At present I am reading each student’s report from Prep to Grade 6. While there is no doubt this is an extremely time consuming task it is also an incredibly rewarding task for two main reasons.
Firstly, I am absolutely in awe of the amount of time, thought and care that each teacher has taken with each individual report. Secondly it is a privilege to be able to read of each student’s strengths and achievements and the progress made.
On Wednesday 27th June when reports are issued I hope everyone celebrates with their child/ren when they read the mid-year reports. Every child has put in effort, and every child has shown progress in at least some aspect of their learning. Could some have done more? Perhaps, but this is the chance to set goals for the second part of the year, to reinforce the discussions held at school about valuing and using learning time, taking responsibility, having a go, doing your best. Student reports provide an opportunity to refocus and set improvement goals.
Optional Parent Teacher interviews will be taking place in the last week of Term 2. These interviews strengthen the partnership between school and home, ensuring that we all work together to assist your child to reach their full potential. Information will be included in the report packs.

Administration of Medication
“From time to time it may be necessary for medication to be administered to students during school hours, or whilst on excursions, in order to keep them safe. Section 95A of the Poisons Regulations 2008 (Tas) sets out requirements to be followed when administering medication to students.” Tasmanian Catholic Education Office
Holy Rosary Catholic School’s policy for staff to administer medication clearly states it can only be administered where a student’s parent/carer has provided written permission. This permission states what dosage, how it is to be taken, and when it is to be taken. It also gives clear direction to staff regarding the prescribed or non-prescribed medication.
Students must not carry medication unless there is a written agreement between the school and the student’s parent/carer. This includes asthma medication.
Parents/carers are responsible for keeping the school updated if the requirement for prescription medication changes or has expired. This also applies to asthma and anaphylaxis medication. The Tasmanian Catholic Education Office recommendations for Asthma and Anaphylaxis plans is that they should be updated annually.

Cyber Safety Support
We thought this would be a useful article for parents to read in relation to the game Fortnite. A significant number of our students are informing us that they have access to this game at home and the article gives some suggestions for parents.
Thank you

News from Qkr
As of June 6th some of the older versions of the Qkr App will no longer work, and families must update their App. Most people have auto update enabled in their phone settings so this will happen seamlessly for them. If any parents are getting a message saying the App has stopped working, you simply have to download the current version from the App store.
If you still have any issues, there is always the website on offer as a backup to people with really old phones that may not be able to upgrade.
