Principals Report

Dear Parents/Guardians
The staff at Holy Rosary Catholic School work tirelessly to ensure that our students have every opportunity to learn new things, participate in in-school events, and go out of the school to visit places and experience those once in a life time opportunities. Throughout the past week the students had the opportunity to be immersed in innovative activities that illustrated the importance of literacy in our lives. Our committed approach to ensuring that the literacy standards of all our students continue to increase has seen the development of a very committed reading community at Holy Rosary Catholic School. The funds raised from our successful Book Fair will go toward the purchase of additional reading resources to continue to foster the love of reading that continues to develop so strongly in our school. Our annual Book Week Parade was another wonderful event and I continue to be inspired and in awe of the efforts that our parents put into this event.
This week we have our Father’s Day Stall on Wednesday and Thursday and we thank Mrs. Carmel Maynard and her helpers for providing our students with such an amazing shopping experience. On Friday morning we welcome all in our community to our Family Breakfast. We have an exciting and varied menu that is consistent with our status as an allergy aware school.
We wish our Grade 3 students and staff a wonderful first experience of School Camp on the 6th and 7th September and thank our staff for the coordination and planning of this special event. I look forward to joining the Grade 3’s on Thursday night.
A big thank you and congratulations to staff, students and parents for the collective contribution to ensuring the many events we are involved with are always so successful. It is a privilege to be part of this fantastic school community.
From the 20th September until the 19th October I will be on leave. I am extremely fortunate to be a part of the Catholic Education Tasmania Saints of Italy Pilgrimage and will travel to Rome, Siena and Assisi with Archbishop Julian Porteous and a group of 12 Tasmanian principals. During my time of leave Mrs. Gemma Bennett and Mrs. Lauren McCallum will be Acting Co Principals. I know that all in our community will give Mrs. Bennett and Mrs. McCallum every support.
We wish all our Father, Grandfathers, Uncles and special people in our lives a wonderful and happy day on Sunday for Father’s day.
We ask all in our community to keep in their prayers and thoughts Mrs Angela Fraser and Mr Mark Waddington (husband of Mrs Jacinta Waddington).

Kind Regards
Bernadette Brooks
Reflection
Fatherly Challenges
There is a photo of me with my father taken when I was a small child. We are on George St. in Sydney at night, probably a Saturday. My parents had taken me into the city, I am told, because I liked the city lights. I have a vague recollection: all the brightness and bustle was somewhat overwhelming, but I was secure. Daddy had my hand.
That is something we want from ‘fathers’ – the encouragement to enter into bigger, exciting, more challenging experiences, while experiencing the support we need to face the unknown. To achieve this is one of the great balancing acts of parenting: encouraging a child (or adolescent or adult) to grow through new experiences yet offering support that does not stifle.
God as ‘Father’ is one of the primary images of our Christian faith. Too often, this image just presents God as a caring, supportive figure. But God also challenges us and often with a sharp jolt, which leads to the complaint, ‘Why has God done this to me?’ Because God wants us to grow up. If we make the radical mental shift and start asking what is positive in the situations we perceive as negative, our lives will become richer and more loving. By asking, ‘What can I learn from this?’, we allow God to take us by the hand and help us transform the dark places of our lives with life-giving light.
Loving God,
As I face the challenges that come to me,
Accepting your support, may I learn how to teach my child/ren to face difficulties with courage and creativity.
May your Spirit inspire us to the fullness of life Jesus offers.
We ask this in his name, confident that you will hear us.

Book Week
Thank you to all our families who came along and supported Book Week. There were so many beautiful books to choose from. It was wonderful to see our students taking part in our Book Week Parade.

Happy smiles all round

Grade 2
Science
Last week, Grade 2 students went on an excursion to the Festival of Bright Ideas. This festival was held at Princes Wharf in Salamanca and consisted of lots of different workshops and presentations that were based upon the different scientific areas. We learned about chemical sciences and how materials can react to create fire or how helium and nitrogen can be used to create a chemical reaction; how to use STEM to help a baby eel over a dam wall; how to make paper; coding using Scratch and how a 3D printer works, to name a few.
It was a fantastic excursion that was very hands on. We learnt a lot and were able to connect our prior learning in Science to many of the workshops that were there.
Within our own Science lessons, we have been learning about the Earth’s Natural resources and in particular, water. Some groups were fortunate to visit an exhibition that focused upon the impact that littering has upon our water sources and what we can do to look after this precious resource.
In class, we have been learning how to identify and recognise water sources. We have been using the game ‘Minecraft’ as a tool to assist our learning to explore worlds and locate and identify different water sources. We took screenshots of water sources and collated different water sources in Pic Collage.
English - Visual Literacy
This term, Grade 2 are learning how to read and write to persuade. Persuade means to form an opinion and convince someone to agree with your opinion, buy something, do something or go somewhere. We have been looking at a variety of different texts to help us understand how to persuade and what elements of different texts are used to persuade us.
We have been focusing on Visual Literacy and identifying the techniques that advertisers use in particular in the media to persuade us. We have explored elements such as:
- Colour
- Modality - low and high modality
- Close up
- Extreme close up
- Wide angle
- Extreme wide shot
- Offer
- Demand
- Reading path
- Slogan/catchphrase
- Endorsement by an expert or famous person
After spending some time exploring these techniques, we have begun our own advertising company and have started our drafts of creating persuasive advertisements that include 4 of the above techniques. See if you can identify any of the above techniques in the attached images selling either: a new ice-cream flavour, a new or improved toy or a destination.

Soccer

Our soccer season concluded on Saturday with the Gala Day at Metro. We would sincerely like to thank all our students, parents, coaches and managers for their commitment to Saturday morning soccer and ensuring that Holy Rosary was so well represented. On behalf of all I would especially like to thanks Ms Sally Feldmanis who has coordinated the soccer for the 2018 season. Sally has been tireless in her communication with teams and organisation and we have been incredibly fortunate to have her in this role.
Congratulations

Congratulations to Cooper in Grade 4R who will be representing Glenorchy Knights Soccer Club at the Croatian Tournament in Melbourne, September 2018.
Students of the Week

Kindergarten Lunch Orders

Until the end of Term 3 Kindergarten children DO NOT have lunch orders. When we return in Term 4 Kindergarten students will be able to order their lunch. Holy Rosary follows this procedure each year to allow our Kinder students to become familiar with their class routines and eating lunch with their peers. We feel that in Term 4 they are then ready to make the step to following the procedure for the lunch orders - taking them to and collecting them from the canteen. Thank you for your support in this matter.

A reminder to all families that the Tasmanian Government Meningococcal Forms and Envelopes need to be returned to the school whether or not your child is participating in the vaccination progam.
Students Not Returning in 2019
