Principals Report

We would like to welcome everyone back after a lovely holiday break. We are very excited to get into what will be a very busy and productive term. It is not often you get the chance to walk in someone else's shoes. Over the last month we took on the role of Acting Principals in Ms Bernadette Brooks absence. During this time we have been given an insight into what it is like to walk in her shoes. This experience has given us a new appreciation for the work that she does for our students and our school every single day. It has also led us to consider what it is like to walk in someone else's shoes and how often do we stop and reflect on what work, school, home or life might be like for those around us? How often do we stop to appreciate those around us, our families, friends, colleagues and acquaintances?
We would like to say a very big thank you to the staff, students and families for their support during this last month. In particular our leadership team Mrs Jacinta Waddington and Mr Brent Pearce and our office staff Sue Reardon, Sharon Goldsworthy and Jacki Jones.
Last week we celebrated Holy Rosary week. This is a time for our school to reflect on the 57 years in which we have been educating the children of Claremont and surrounding suburbs. Father Nowlan, Parish Priest of St Bernard’s, commissioned the Dominican Sisters to take charge of the new school that was being built in the Claremont area. Sr. Gabriel (Principal) and Sr. Catherine Mary arrived in Tasmania and with little in the way of resources and finances began to educate the children of the Parish of St. Bernard’s. Holy Rosary opened its doors for the first time in February 1961, with an enrolment of 37 students and the two Sisters as teachers. It was officially blessed by Archbishop Young on 5th March. There were only two classrooms at the time (currently where 4M and 4R are located) and a small staff area. Haven’t we changed in this time...we now have an enrolment of over 450 students in 17 classes and have continuously been adding and upgrading our classrooms and facilities since then.
We wish all or students, teachers and families a very exciting Term 4.
Kind Regards
Lauren McCallum & Gemma Bennett

Reflection
The Rosary holds a special significance to Holy Rosary Catholic School as, before 1961 there wasn’t a Catholic school in the local area of Claremont. The local parishioners of St Bernard’s prayed the rosary to ask for guidance in establishing a school to educate the local children. Their prayers were answered with the arrival of the Dominican sisters who became the first teachers at the newly built Holy Rosary Catholic school.
The rosary is a devotion in honor of the Virgin Mary. The word rosary comes from Latin and means a garland of roses, the rose being one of the flowers used to symbolise the Virgin Mary. October is the month of the most Holy Rosary. The is a series of prayers which brings to mind 20 of the most important events in the life of Jesus and Mary. Rosary beads contain five mysteries. The beads are to help keep in memory certain principal events in the Catholic faith. The mysteries are grouped into groups of five; joyful mysteries, luminous mysteries, sorrowful mysteries and glorious mysteries. For each of the 20 mysteries we pray a ‘decade’, which is:
- One Our Father
- Ten Hail Mary’s
- One Glory Be
We follow these prayers on a set of Rosary beads.
Grade 3 -6 Athletics Carnival
On Friday, 19th October Grade 3-6 had their Athletics Carnival. Students participated in track and field events, mega shot put and turbo tennis. Students participated well and Doyle are to be congratulated in taking out the points win on the day.

Southern Tasmanian Basketball Championships
Over the past weekend 7 Holy Rosary teams competed in the Basketball Championships. This was our fifth year of competing in the championships. In 2013 when we started very few of our students had ever played basketball and we played in our school soccer tops. Fast forward five years and we have a firm basketball culture in our school, fantastic basketball tops for all teams and huge participation. To see past students and parents still supporting and coaching our team's shows what a strong community spirit we have. A massive thank you to our coaches for all your efforts.
Scott Daley (past parent), Marcus Cooper, Ross Meredith, Tim Hughes, Maddison Quinn (past student), Cooper Hills (past student), Lewis Crennan (past student), Sally Feldmanis, Darron Barr, Glenn Fogarty, Michelle Crennan, Tracey Lewis and Shane & Kimbra Hutton.
The biggest thank you of all goes to Kate Clark Who had a vision 5 years ago and has achieved this vision and that was to see our students have the opportunity to compete and develop a love of the game.

Class Combinations for 2019
As the year rapidly progresses we begin the process of creating our classes for 2019. It is a lengthy process to create class lists as teachers discuss combinations that work best together and special requirements as well as mixing abilities and interests. There are many conversations and rewrites, as we work together to create the best possible learning environment for every student.
As advised in a letter sent home last week, requests for class placements must be submitted in writing or by email to the Principal by Monday, 29th October. Requests must be submitted on an annual basis. Please note that only those requests based on sound educational or social reasons that are the result of a teacher consultation will be considered.
If parents know that they will not be continuing enrolment of their child/children at Holy Rosary Catholic School in 2019 please let the Office know as soon as possible, as we have students on a waiting list for positions.
Staffing for classes for 2019 is still in the process of being organised, however, there will be two of each class for Kindergarten, Prep, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, and Grade 6. There will be three Grade 5 classes.
Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure
On Monday, 22nd October our K-2 students attended the Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Show. This presents protective behaviour strategies for children in a fun and non-confrontational style with Ditto the friendly lion cub the star performer.
The main learning objectives in the show, include Ditto’s Three Rules:
- We all have the right to feel safe with people
- It’s OK to say ‘no’ if you feel unsafe or unsure
- Nothing is so yucky that you can’t tell someone about it
The program objectives that relate to personal safety key criteria include:
- Difference between ‘yes’ and ‘no’ feelings
- Recognition of ‘warning signs’
- Identification of ‘private parts’ and ‘privacy’
- Help children identify language and feelings associated with secrets
- There’s no secret that you can’t tell someone
- Action children should take if they feel unsafe or unsure
Book Fair
Thank you to everyone who purchased a book from our Book Fair, earlier this year. We sold $5,413 worth of books and earnt $1,623 worth of points for our school to purchase resources from Scholastic.

New Parent Group at Chigwell House
Chigwell House recently conducted a survey of the local community. We have heard what they had to say and as a result, MA Chigwell House is pleased to offer a new parents-only group on Thursdays from 12.30pm-2.30pm starting on 8th November 2018.
We will provide:
- A cosy space for parents to have time away from their child/ren to meet over afternoon tea and a cuppa
- Information and guest speakers on topical issues (provided/raised by parents)
- Guided discussion by a group leader (ice breakers and the like if necessary)
- Adjunct care (limited spaces so must pre-book)
Essentially we want the content of each session to be driven by the parents attending and ideally we would like to attract those parents that are socially isolated and/or have few or no connections to their community, however anyone with a child under 12 is welcome.
As a reminder, we also run a play and learn session every Monday from 10.30am-12.30pm where parents can complete fun activities with their child/ren under 5 years of age.
For details of all the above Chigwell House programs please see the attached brochures.
